The State Center Consortium is pleased to announce the award of funds from the Colton-Redlands -Yucaipa Regional Occupational Program (CRYROP) Governor’s Grant for the Fall Semester 2010.

These funds are designated to support Career Technical Education (CTE) teacher training for new teachers coming out of industry and business. We are very excited about the possibilities this represents for Consortium ‘partners in education’.

The governor’s funding of the CTE Teach training program stemmed from statewide concerns about retention of new CTE teachers. In an effort to promote the success of CTE teachers unfamiliar with educational practices, CRYROP developed a pilot two-year training program.

The CTE Teach training program offers teacher support through various modalities, including:

  • Teacher Workshops
  • Class Observations
  • Teacher Feedback Sessions
  • Mentor Consultations
  • Training Modules
  • Personal Goal Setting
  • Peer Mentoring
  • Modeling
  • Model Classroom Tours

The Training Modules cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to Teaching
  • Scope & Sequence Plans
  • Learning Styles
  • Class Syllabi
  • Classroom Management
  • Authentic Assessment
  • Integrated Curriculum
  • Grading Policies & Practices
  • Lesson Planning

Results

The early results with CRYROP CTE teachers in the pilot training have been very encouraging, with participating teachers reporting more confidence, informed instructional practices and increased professional growth. The LEAs who have partnered with CRYROP have reported their early reviews reflect higher retention rates.

Mentor

The State Center Consortium will oversee the CTE Teach Training Program for the valley. Shelley Powell will be the Certificated Project Leader for the program. Shelley taught for 23 years as a career education teacher, after working 11 years in management for the Fresno County Health Department. She will be able to relate to our new CTE teachers, as she herself made the transition from business to education and knows what it takes to grow professionally and become a successful educator.

Opportunity

We want to extend the opportunity to have your new CTE Teachers involved in this exciting peer mentor program. (CRYROP has found their CTE teachers value having a coach and professional resource to go to, without the anxiety of an evaluation).

Sign-Ups

We need to know which teachers you want to refer for participation in the CTE Teach program for the inaugural year. Shelley would like to initiate contacts as soon as possible, in order to provide support from the start of the school year. Call the State Center Consortium Office at (559) 324-6410 for more info.

Update: August 16, 2010 Our class is now full, but we will be reopening the application process in January 2011.
